Markforged takes the guesswork out of 3D printing for industrial applications with new simulation software

Virtual testing validates the strength of advanced composite parts and automatically optimizes print settings to reduce costs and speed up production

FRANKFURT AM MAIN, Germany, November 14, 2022–(BUSINESS WIRE)–During Formnext, Markforged (NYSE: MKFG), the company that builds manufacturing resilience by enabling industrial production where it’s needed, announced new features for simulation for its additive manufacturing software. The simulation is available as a free trial until April 2023, and the company plans to make the feature accessible through a paid subscription thereafter.

Integrating 3D printing into tooling and end-use applications requires confidence in the strength of parts. By replacing slow and costly design/print/break test cycles with virtual testing, simulation can enable manufacturers to extend their use of additive manufacturing to the most demanding production applications.

Larsen Motorsports builds jet-powered drag racing vehicles that hurtle at over 280 mph. But, the stock aluminum steering wheels are designed for hands much larger than those of House of Kolor-sponsored rookie drag racer Josette Roach, putting safety and performance at risk. Larsen Motorsports used Simulation to design and print a continuous carbon fiber reinforced Onyx™ steering wheel strong enough to replace aluminum. “We can now test it with Simulation, iterate and keep going until we get a design we’re happy with,” said Brian Tocci, chief operating officer, Larsen Motorsports. “We don’t need to print ten different parts. We can do it all in simulation.”

Unlike traditional software tools that require specialist expertise and time-consuming analysis, the simulation is designed for additive manufacturing and operates within the familiar Eiger™ software cut and print workflow. Any user can validate the strength and stiffness of parts through virtual testing by identifying anchor and load surfaces, then entering load values, safety factor and maximum deflection. They can then optimize parts by automatically determining print parameters for floors, walls, infill, and fiber reinforcement to meet cost and print speed goals while maintaining adequate strength.

“Simulation enables our customers to adopt digital forging deeper into their manufacturing operations by replacing more critical tools and end-use metal parts with advanced 3D printed composite parts validated and optimized with continuous reinforcement. fibers,” said Shai Terem, President and CEO of Markforge. “Cloud-based software innovation, such as simulation, is central to our mission to bring industrial parts production to the point where we need it.”

The simulation is available worldwide today as a free trial for anyone with a Markforged Eiger account. To open an account, visit Markforged will be showcasing “How In-Process Simulation, Monitoring and Inspection Will Drive the Future of Additive Manufacturing” at Formnext on Friday, November 18 at 11:40 a.m. in Hall 12, Booth E38.
